Biography

Dr. Chol Shin, associate professor of the Department of Internal Medicine, is appointed as a chief, at the division of pulmonary, Ansan Hospital, KUMC and chair of the institute of human genomic study, Korea University. Sleep disorders include any disorder that affects, disrupts, or involves sleep. For example, difficulty related to sleeping, including difficulties in falling or staying asleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, or abnormal behaviors while sleeping are sleep disorders. Main research focus of Dr. Shin’s Lab is problems related to sleep. Since he joined School of Medicine, Korea University, he has organized and conducted a 10-year Cohort study, which includes a general population dwelling in Ansan. This study has been sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. From the observational data, he has reported prevalence and incidence of sleep-related diseases such as snoring, sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome. Published papers from his research group have reported critical findings on risk or prognostic factors. For example, he found that metabolic syndrome and insulin are highly associated with incidence of sleep apnea. Currently, Dr. Shin is interested in discovering biomarkers of sleep-related diseases using State of Art technology and animal models of nacolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea. He is also enthusiastic in the development of medical device for reducing snoring and sleep apnea. The device absolutely depends on high technology such as biomechatronics, sensing technology, and ubiquitous health care. Dr. Shin graduated Korea University Medical School in Seoul. And then, he also studied his medical residency at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center (Albert Einstein Medical School Program) in NY., USA. In 1999, He had a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Bioscience, University of Hawaii. He has been a faculty of Korea University College of Medicine since 1999.

Research Interest

Dr. Shin is research interest includes: discovering biomarkers of sleep-related diseases using State of Art technology and animal models of narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea. He is also enthusiastic in the development of medical device for reducing snoring and sleep apnea.
