Evolutionary Biology is the field that deals with the study of evolutionary relations among groups of organisms and the computational simulation techniques for the study of biological, behavioral, and social systems. Molecular evolution is the process of the genetic material in populations of organisms changing over time. The genetic material consists of DNA, long sequences of nucleotides in each individual organism. Evolutionary ecology is a field within both ecology and evolution that examines how interactions between and within species evolve. It explicitly considers the evolutionary effects of competitors, mutualists, predators, prey and pathogens. Evolutionary developmental biology (evolution of development or informally, evo-devo) is a field of biology that compares the developmental processes of different organisms to determine the ancestral relationship between them, and to discover how developmental processes evolved. The interaction between biological molecules, cells or individuals often leads to emergent properties that cannot be predicted from the characteristics of a single unit. Systems Biology attempts to quantify the richness of such interactions in living systems. Evolutionary systems biology takes the research one step further by examining the consequences of changing the interaction through evolution by natural selection.
