Mount Royal University

Mount Royal University (MRU) is a public university in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Mount Royal was founded in 1910 as a primary and secondary school. Its became a post-secondary institution in 1931 as Mount Royal Junior College (MRC) offering transfer courses to the University of Alberta (founded 1905) and later to the University of Calgary (founded 1966). A War memorial Honour Roll is dedicated to Mount Royal alumni who have volunteered for active service with Canada's Fighting Forces. It was renamed Mount Royal University in 2009 by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. As Mount Royal begins its 100th anniversary celebrations, there are approximately 12,000 full and part-time credit students enrolled at Mount Royal, plus an additional 5,000 students in the Music Conservatory and over 50,000 individual non-credit course registrations per year.

The Students Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) operates Wyckham House, a student centre housing dozens of student services, several food kiosks, a used books bookstore, a copy centre, an eco-store and the Hub, the campus pub. SAMRU is owned and operated by Mount Royal credit students, and offers a variety of services for its members.

The Students’ Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) is one of the oldest student governments in Alberta. It runs students clubs, organizes concerts and awareness events, and provides dozens of student support services. The Association participates in Mount Royal’s New Student Orientation which assists new students in getting accustomed to Mount Royal.

The Mount Royal Staff Association (MRSA) endeavors to maintain a mutual and respectful relationship between the Support Staff and Mount Royal University. The MRSA has the responsibility of ensuring fair and equitable working conditions for staff and strives to uphold a constant communication link between the staff and the University. The MRSA recognizes and promotes important contributions and continued efforts of staff.

Chartered under the Post-Secondary Learning Act, the Mount Royal Faculty Association (MRFA) represents all credit faculty at Mount Royal. The faculty complement in 2008-09 was just over 800. The MRFA is the sole bargaining agent for credit faculty, offers a variety of professional development and social opportunities for members, and administers a range of faculty services including the Faculty Centre, a lounge and meeting space that connects faculty and enhances the collegial environment.
