Objective: Athletes engage in a cognitive evaluation following an injury to determine if resources are present to manage any potential stress attributed to being injured1. This evaluation determines both behavioral and emotional responses to the injury and can be influenced by a number of factors, including social support2. Interpersonal conflict is another factor that could influence the cognitive evaluation. Interpersonal conflict may be present in athletics in the form of athletic trainer-coach conflict3. The purpose of this study was to describe the levels of social support and conflict collegiate athletes perceive following an injury, and determine relationships between those perceptions and other variables. 
Methods: In this study, NCAA Division I, II, and III athletes (N= 246) from five institutions from reported perceptions of social support from their athletic trainer, and the presence of conflict between their athletic trainer and coach following an injury through a web-based survey. Additional demographics, such as type of sport, level of competition, and status on the team, were assessed. 
Results: Athletes perceived athletic trainers as quality sources of social support. Revenue sport athletes perceived higher levels of modeling social support from their athletic trainer when compared to non-revenue athletes. However, injured athletes perceived low levels of athletic trainer-coach conflict with no differences based on demographic variables. Additionally, no group differences were found between perceptions of social support or conflict based upon the athlete�s status on the team or level of competition. 
Conclusions: These results indicate that athletes� perceptions of social support from athletic trainers, varied depending on the type of sport in which they participate. Understanding variables that influence how an athlete perceives support from their athletic trainer could improve rehabilitation outcomes by way of influencing the cognitive appraisal injured athletes make leading to both positive behavioral and cognitive actions.

Injuries are a common aspect of participation in collegiate athletics. Approximately 50% of all collegiate athletes sustain at least one injury requiring medical attention or restricting participation during their careers4. An athlete will make a cognitive appraisal following an injury to determine what it is and how to react to the stressor5. An injured athlete assesses what has happened, available resources to cope with the injury, and the resulting changes to their life during the cognitive appraisal5. The overall appraisal of the stressor, nature of the injury, and coping factors will influence how the injured athlete will emotionally and behaviorally respond to the injury. The recovery outcome could be influenced by the behavioral and emotional responses1,2. One major factor that can affect the cognitive appraisal of an injury is the amount and quality of perceived social support available to the injured athlete1. Collegiate student-athletes rely upon athletic trainers more frequently as sources of social support than parents, friends, or family members6. This support from athletic trainers can influence the athlete to make a more positive evaluation of their situation following an injury2. 
While social support can influence an athlete�s response to an injury, other variables also influence the appraisal of the injury1,2. Perhaps the presence of conflict could influence the provision of social support. Rahim7 defines conflict as a process rooted in incompatibility, disagreement, or dissonance within or between social beings. The presence of conflict in the workplace environment can result in a negative work environment or outcomes for workers8-9. In the athletic environment, conflict between coaches and athletic trainers will occasionally occur4,10-12. For example, the decision on whether an injured athlete should return to play could be a source of athletic trainer-coach conflict4,13. The presence of athletic trainer-coach conflict can ultimately negatively impact an athletic trainer�s feelings or emotions in the workplace10 or their career path13.  If an athletic trainer has negative feelings in a work environment, the result could be inadequate social support for an injured athlete. However, whether or not increased stress on an athletic trainer changes or modifies how athletic trainers interact with injured athletes is unknown. That is, does athletic trainer-coach conflict have an impact on the social support provided to injured athletes by athletic trainers?
As social support and conflict could influence an athlete�s appraisal of an injury, it is important to understand any variables that could influence an athlete�s perception of either social support or conflict. A relationship between an athlete�s status on the team (starter v. non-starter) was found to be related to satisfaction with social support from teammates and coaches following an injury15. Additional variables, such as the level of competition (NCAA Division I, II, or III) or type of sport (revenue v. non-revenue sport), could potentially influence an athlete�s perceptions as well. While these additional variables have not been directly examined we can intuitively predict possible differences, based upon mission statements of the different NCAA levels16-17 or through additional research examining perceptions of revenue and non-revenue sport athletes18-19. 
	The purpose of this study was to describe athletes� perceptions of social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict. Additionally, the relationship between athletes� perceptions of social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict in relation to sport type, level of competition, or status on the team were examined. We hypothesized that athletes would perceive moderate to high levels of social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict, and that these two constructs would be negatively related. No hypotheses were put forth for possible relationships between social support and other factors (i.e., status on the team, level of competition, or type of sport) due to a lack of consistency or related findings in the literature.  
METHODS
Procedures
Following Institutional Review Board approval, athletes at five colleges and universities in a Midwestern state were contacted via email. These institutions included NCAA Division I   (n = 2), II (n = 1), and III (n = 2) universities/colleges. A total of 2,301 athletes at the five institutions were sent a link to a survey hosted on the Qualtrics survey platform (Qualtrics LLC, Provo, UT) about their perceptions of social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict following a recent injury. The first page of the survey included an informed consent form and an initial question. The initial question asked the athlete, �Have you had an injury in the past year that kept you from participating in your sport for at least one week?� If a participant answered �yes,� the athlete was then provided with additional questions. The survey was started by 512 athletes and was completed by 246 athletes. This resulted in a participation rate of 22.3%.
Participants
Inclusion criteria required that an athlete had to have suffered an injury in the past year that resulted in them missing practice and/or competitions for at least one week. Of those athletes who gave consent to participate in the study, 246 were included based on this criterion. Participants came from NCAA Division I (n = 95), II (n = 35), and III (n = 100) institutions. Participants were mostly involved in football (n = 44), track and field (n = 35), and soccer (n = 28) when their injuries occurred. Additionally, participants identified their status on the team as either starters (n = 108), non-starters (n = 92), or medical redshirts (n = 30). Of those participating in this study, 44% were male and 56% were female, and predominantly identified themselves as Caucasian (91.3%). The remaining participants described themselves as African American (3.9%), Hispanic (2.2%), or other (2.6%), which included European and Bi-Racial. 
Measures
Social support was assessed with the Social Support Inventory20 (SSI). Participants completed 20 items on perceived social support from their athletic trainer designed to assess acceptance and belonging, appraisal and coping assistance, behavioral and cognitive guidance, and modeling social support. These scales assess the four types of social support identified by Brown, esteem, expressive, guidance, and utilitarian needs20.  Esteem needs require both information and feedback to reinforce the idea that a person is valued and respected by those around them. Meeting expressive needs allows for the athlete to express thoughts and feelings about their injury, their new identity, and their future. Guidance needs can be met through the guidance or assistance to properly cognitively evaluate a situation and make appropriate decisions on how to both emotionally and behaviorally respond. Utilitarian needs are the physical needs an injured athlete requires. The SSI uses a 7-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 �none� to 7 �a lot.� The SSI has demonstrated strong reliability and validity with similar samples, with overall alpha coefficients ranging from .79 to .9121. 
Conflict was assessed with the Intragroup Conflict Scale9,22 (ICS). In this survey, two subscales, task and relationship conflict, were assessed with three questions each. Task conflict develops out of disagreements on viewpoints, ideas, and opinions on the work or tasks being done9. Relationship conflict arises from interpersonal incompatibilities due to tension, animosity, and annoyance9. A 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 �none� to 5 �a lot� was used to rate the level of athletic trainer-coach conflict the athlete perceived following their injury. The ICS has demonstrated strong reliability scores with alpha coefficients of .92 and .85 for relationship conflict, and .87 and .79 for task conflict9,22. Participants also reported their status on the team, NCAA level of competition, and sport in which they participated. 
Statistical Analysis
	Prior to data analysis, post hoc decisions were made to reorganize data collected from participants based on their levels of competition and status on the team. Due to a low number of participants, data collected from non-starters and medical redshirts were consolidated into a single �non-starter group.� Additionally, data collected from Division II and III athletes was merged into a single group. The mission statements of Division II and III focus on education first, athletic participation second; differentiating themselves from Division I and allowing for the reorganization. Data collected from the SSI20 and ICS22 was used and analyzed through a description of the mean score to examine the presence of perceived social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict. Pearson correlations were used to determine the relationship between the level of perceived athletic trainer-coach conflict and social support from athletic trainers. Two separate 2 X 2 analysis of variance (ANOVAs) were conducted to compare NCAA Division I and II/III athletes and starters and non-starters on perceived levels of athletic trainer-coach conflict and social support from athletic trainers. Additionally, separate MANOVAs were conducted to compare revenue sport athletes (football, basketball, and wrestling) to non-revenue sport athletes (baseball, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, track and field, soccer, swimming, tennis, and volleyball ) on perceived levels of athletic trainer-coach conflict and social support from athletic trainers. A comparison of the means determined which group was significantly higher on each type of social support from the athletic trainer or type of conflict. 
RESULTS
Alpha coefficients were calculated to determine reliabilities of the social support and conflict scales. Alpha levels ranged from .91 to .95 for social support subscales, .86 for task conflict, and .91 for relationship conflict. Alpha coefficients for the social support scales (acceptance and belonging, appraisal and coping behavioral, and cognitive, and modeling), and conflict scales (task and relationship conflict) can be seen along the diagonal of Table 1. 
Based on the mean scores, overall, athletes perceived relatively high levels of social support from athletic trainers. Unexpectedly, athletes had relatively low perceptions of athletic trainer-coach conflict (see Table 1). Pearson correlations were then conducted to examine the relationship between perceptions of social support from the athletic trainer and athletic trainer-coach conflict. Only weak relationships were found between perceptions of social support provided by athletic trainers and the presence of athletic trainer-coach conflict. No significant relationships emerged between any type of social support from the athletic trainer and task and relationship conflict (see Table 1).
In order to assess athletes� status by level of competition for perceived levels of social support provided by athletic trainers, a 2 X 2 ANOVA was conducted. The 2 X 2 ANOVA was not significant for status (Wilks� � = .98, F (4, 221) = 1.01, p = .40), level of competition (Wilks  � = .98, F (4, 221) = .95, p = .44) nor for a status by level of competition interaction (Wilks  � = .99, F (4, 221) = .37, p = .83). 
Next, in order to assess the athletes  status by level of competition interaction for both task and relationship conflict, two separate 2 x 2 ANOVAs were conducted. In the first analysis, starters and non-starters across the levels of competition were compared on perceptions of athletic trainer-coach task conflict. The 2 X 2 ANOVA was not significant for playing status (F (1, 225) = .12, p = .73), level of competition (F (1, 225) = .17, p = .68), nor for a status by level of competition interaction (F (1, 225) = .026, p = .87). The second analysis then compared athletes with different playing status and from different levels of competition on their perceptions of athletic trainer-coach relationship conflict. The 2 X 2 ANOVA was not significant for a status effect (F (1, 225) = .07, p = .79), level of competition (F (1, 225) = .31, p = .58), nor for a status by level of competition interaction (F (1, 225) = .06, p = .81). 
A MANOVA was conducted to compare revenue and non-revenue sport participants on perceived athletic trainer-coach conflict. The MANOVA was not significant for level of conflict: Wilks  � = .996, F (2, 224) = .50, p = .61 (see Table 2 for group means and standard deviations). A MANOVA was also conducted to compare revenue and non-revenue sports athletes on perceptions of social support from athletic trainers. The MANOVA was significant for athletic trainer social support (Wilks  � = .91, F (4, 221) = 5.47, p < .001). Comparison of the means revealed that perceptions of modeling social support from athletic trainers were significantly higher for revenue sport athletes compared to non-revenue sport athletes. 
DISCUSSION
The perceptions of athletes about the presence and possible impact of athletic trainer-coach conflict have not been examined to date. The presence of variables that may influence the perception of social support are important to understand. These variables could influence the perception of social support, which in turn, may influence how an athlete cognitively perceives an injury1,2. The first purpose of this study was to describe collegiate athletes� perceptions of social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict, and to investigate a possible relationship between perceived social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict. With regards to social support, moderate to high levels of support were perceived in all four areas by athletes: acceptance and belonging, appraisal and coping, behavioral and cognitive, and modeling support. This finding is similar to past studies that have demonstrated student-athletes rely upon athletic trainers for social support6,29. In particular, athletes have consistently reported the need to have someone to who they can express emotions and feelings about their injury to29. This support can assist an athlete in making a positive cognitive appraisal and better respond cognitively and behaviorally to an injury 1,2. 
Additionally, the support provided to injured athletes needs to fulfill their esteem needs30. Most importantly, athletes in this study reported a high level of support through guidance. Injured athletes want someone who is willing to talk about their injury, and someone who can help set realistic goals for rehabilitation, and their ultimate return to play29. This information is needed from coaches, teammates and athletic trainers throughout rehabilitation30. This support is important to ensure athletes feel they have the necessary resources to cope with the stress an injury can cause. If an athlete feels they can cope with an injury, they are more likely to display positive behavioral and emotional responses to an injury1,2. 
Unexpectedly, low levels of athletic trainer-coach conflict were reported by athletes in this study. Previous research from athletic trainers� viewpoint has demonstrated the presence of this conflict and its possible negative effects on the athletic trainer3,12,14,23. Several possible reasons exist for the low levels of conflict reported by athletes. First, athletes might have been shielded from any disagreements between their athletic trainer and coach about their injury, rehabilitation, or whether or not the athlete was ready to return to full participation. This would be a positive finding, as interpersonal conflict can have a negative impact on third parties24-25. Second, participating universities used to recruit participants could have impacted the levels of perceived athletic trainer-coach conflict. For example, for one of the NCAA Division I institutions, the athletic trainers are not employees of the athletic department, but rather a separate academic department. The different administrative structure might have an impact on the hiring, retention, and day-to-day athletic training environment. This could include diminished levels of conflict12,26. Third, perhaps little conflict actually occurred at the institutions between athletic trainers and coaches. The presence of athletic trainer-coach conflict has been explored from the perspective of the athletic trainer 3,10,13-14, and little research has examined athletic trainer-coach conflict from the coach�s perspective27-28. Thus, the reports of athletic trainer-coach conflict could simply be athletic trainers� perspective on the work environment. Coaches or athletes might not believe this conflict to be common or a source of potential problems. Finally, athletes retrospectively evaluated the presence of conflict in the past year. The athlete�s memory of level of conflict and social support may not have been precise. 
	The results of this study found differences between revenue and non-revenue sport athletes and their perceived levels of modeling support from their athletic trainer. More specifically, revenue sport athletes perceived higher levels of modeling support than non-revenue sport athletes. Prior research has yet to examine differences between injured athletes based on the revenue status of the sport in relation to social support from athletic trainers. Differences on several other variables between revenue and non-revenue sports has been examined in the literature18,19. For example, athletic academic advisors provided different levels of support to revenue athletes18. NCAA Division I academic advisors reported spending the majority of their time (63.8%) with revenue sport athletes. In a similar fashion, differences have been shown between revenue and non-revenue sport participants� perceptions of financial support given by the athletic department19. Thus, in the area of athletic department financial and academic support, there could be an imbalance of support towards revenue athletes.
The current study found that revenue sport athletes perceived higher levels of modeling support following an injury from their athletic trainer. Several possible reasons exist for this difference. First, athletic trainers may provide more support due to the atmosphere associated with working with a revenue sport. Revenue sports often have higher ratios of athletic trainers to athletes. Second, athletic trainers working with revenue sports often have only a single sport on which to focus. Thus, as athletic trainers in these situations have fewer athletes and sports, they can work more closely with an injured athlete. This close relationship could be perceived as a higher level of social support. Overall, the provision of modeling support from athletic trainers could ensure athletes have the optimal environment in which to fully recover. 
Limitations exist for the current study. First, limitations were present due to the characteristics of the institutions from which the athletes were recruited. As previously indicated, one of the institutions has a different administrative structure for athletic training services. The athletic trainers are hired and overseen in an academic department. The athletic department at this institution does not control the recruitment, retention, or assigned duties of the athletic trainers. This administrative structure may insulate the athletic trainers from potential conflict with coaches. If the athletic training staff is under a different administrative structure, then this could lessen conflict between athletic trainers and coaches12,26. Second, limitations could have occurred through the collection of data. An electronic survey was utilized and while the technology made distribution to over 2,300 possible participants quick and easy, some potential problems may have occurred, such as the email not reaching the athlete (e.g., marked as spam or the athlete not opening or reading the email). Future studies could change the timing of data collection. Specifically, the data should be collected while the injured athlete is going through the rehabilitation process and returning to play to better capture the social support and conflict that is present. Assessing athletes� perceptions of both social support and athletic trainer-coach conflict when athletes are injured or close to returning to play rather than up to a year later may lead to more robust findings.
CONCLUSIONS
Results also suggest that overall, college athletes perceive the necessary social support from athletic trainers that can aid the athlete in making a positive cognitive appraisal following an injury. However, there may be a relationship between the perceived levels of support and other variables. In particular, the athlete�s sport in which they participate may be related to perceived social support. Results of this study also suggested athletes perceived low levels of athletic trainer-coach conflict. This result is different than previous literature which suggests athletic trainer-coach conflict may occur more frequently in college athletics3,10-12. Understanding the variables that can influence how an athlete perceives support or how they are actually supported by their athletic trainer could improve rehabilitation outcomes. Future studies should examine further if athletes do perceive this conflict and any negative impacts this conflict may have upon them. Understanding variables that influence how an athlete perceives support from their athletic trainer could improve rehabilitation outcomes by way of influencing the cognitive appraisal injured athletes make leading to both positive behavioral and cognitive actions.
