Biography

Professor Huan Feng is a coastal environmental geochemist with extensive experience in studying source, transport and fate of contaminants in estuarine and coastal systems. His research includes using radionuclides (such as Th-234, Be-7, Pb-210 and Cs-137) as tracers and developing geochemical models for transport and fate of contaminants in riverine and estuarine systems. Professor Feng is also engaged in urban coastal environmental sustainability study by integrating information and developing easily understandable predictive models pertinent to coastal management. Professor Feng is also studying the composition and speciation of chemical compounds and micro-scale structural characterization of materials including sediments and plants using synchrotron radiation techniques. In addition, Professor Feng has been actively collaborating with international researchers in trace element biogeochemical cycle and coastal contamination studies in the Yangtze River intertidal zone, western Bohai Bay and Xiamen Bay in China. In the past, Professor Feng was actively involved in the project of "New York/New Jersey Harbor Contaminated Sediment Processing and Decontamination Technologies” under the federal Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) directed by US EPA Region 2. The goal of the project was to establish treatment facilities for production of beneficial use products from contaminated dredged material taken from the NY/NJ Harbor.

Dr. Huan Feng's research interests include:

  • Natural radionuclides as tracers for trace metal biogeochemical cycle
  • Riverine, estuarine and marine environmental pollution and assessment
  • Land-sea trace element transport
  • Application of synchrotron-based technology in micro-scale study of chemical speciation and concentrations of trace elements, and structural characterization and visualization of geological materials
  • Sediment decontamination technology development

Response: The quality of research results and discussion.

2. What makes a good position paper?

Response: Solid evidence to support the point of view.

3. What are the qualities you look for in an article?

Response: Research methods applied, quality of the data and discussion of the results.

4. Can you give us a broad indication of the types of themes a scientific journal should cover?

Response: I think each specific journal should focus on specific research area and expand to relevant disciplines.

5. What sorts of research methods and frameworks do you expect people to use, and how will they balance conceptual and applied research?

Response: No advice.  It is subject dependent.

6. How would you describe the journal’s mission and editorial objectives to our readers?

Response: Focus on a specific area (not a specific topic).

7. If you could be granted dream articles, what would they be on?

Response: Urban sustainability study, which relates urbanization and economic development in recent decades.

8. Are there any particular areas which you would like to see, or expect to see, collaborate?

Response: Environmental changes

9. How can a publisher ensure the authors/readers a rigorous peer review and quality control?

Response: Electronic online system is a good measure.

10. Your editorial policy is to be eclectic and welcome perspectives from other disciplines and schools. How does this translate into the types of contributions you encourage?

Response: f it is related, the publication should be encouraged.

11. What do you see as the merits of journals, as opposed to book series, as a means of scholarly communications?

Response: The new innovative ideas and new results.

14. How do you differentiate Journal of Hydrogeology & Hydrologic Engineering with other journals in the field?

Response: JHHE is a specialized good journal although this is still a new journal and needstime to build up the popularity with its reputation.
