Mahmud Ashraf is a Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering and is the Research Reporting Coordinator in the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) at UNSW Canberra. Prior to this appointment Dr Ashraf held academic positions in the University of Queensland, Australia and in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He spent a brief spell as a post-doctoral researcher at Imperial College London just after the completion of his PhD at Imperial College London, UK in 2007.Mahmud Ashraf has published around 50 technical papers in the areas of stainless steel, steel and aluminium structures, which exhibit a combination of analytical, experimental and numerical investigations. Mahmud Ashraf is very keen to exploit the beneficial properties of stainless steel in structural applications and to promote use of stainless steel in construction through innovations. Mahmud Ashraf research activities are funded through University grants and funding from the industry. He is currently supervising a number of PhD students and students with research interest in metal and composite structures are highly encouraged to apply for PhD. Scholarships are available for international students with excellent academic records.Dr Ashraf is a regular reviewer of a number of leading engineering journals including Engineering Structures, Proceedings of ICE - Bridge Engineering, Proceedings of ICE - Structures and Buildings, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering, Advanced Steel Construction - An International Journal.

Research Interest

Mahmud Ashraf research interests include Structural Engineering, Numerical Modelling and Mechanical Characterization and Earthquake Engineering.
