With a medical degree in Japan (1987), upon his PhD in 1995 at Nara Medical University, Japan, Saiho Ko has worked as a surgeon focusing on hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery over the last 20 years. His academic carrier was started in the field of hepatic surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma. Some unique insights of HCC were published as several articles in famous international journals. His work was extended to the field of transplantation surgery. He received training of liver transplantation in University of Pittsburgh, USA in 1993. He moved from Nara Medical University to Abdominal and Transplantation Surgery, Hannover University, Germany with Fellowship of Alexander von Humbolt Foundation. He published some research works of transplantation immunology in some high impact factor journals. He returned to Nara Medical University and engaged in hepatobiliary surgery for liver tumors and pancreatic surgery for pancreas cancer, and became Chief of liver transplantation in adult patients. He connected hematology to liver surgery, and published some important articles in this field. After working as an associate professor of surgery in Nara Medical University, he was nominated Director of Surgery, Nara General Medical Centre Hospital in 2010. In this high volume centre of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, he shows full activity as a leading surgeon of expert surgical team.
