Quantum electronics is the topic that covers the interaction between an electromagnetic wave and matter; it is strongly connected to the discovery of the maser and laser. In fact, one could argue that the fundamental ideas behind such interactions were already present in the twenties and thirties, and that the development of quantum electronics as a topic depended as much on the development of technologies (mirror coating, for example) as it from purely theoretical breakthrough.
