South African doctor and medical ethnobotanist. Nigel Gericke was born in Johannesburg and studied botany and later medicine at Witwatersrand University. In 1977, with fellow students C.P. Peeters and G.G. Burelli, he undertook a survey of Bophuthatswana. He has practised in the public health sector in rural, township, and academic settings in South Africa, and also as a district medical officer in Labrador, Canada. Recently with the changing landscape of the aging population and the increase in incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), there has been marked interest to develop strategies to prevent, delay and modify AD. We review the diverse lines of evidence in support of the emerging role of cAMP-mediated Phosphodiesterase (PDE) signalling with respect to aging, inflammation and depression.
