Patellofemoral arthritis is defined as the loss of articular cartilage on the patella facets, the trochlear groove, or both. The incidence of isolated patellofemoral arthritis has been reported in patients older than 55 as anywhere from 2% to 11% in men and 8% to 24% in women. Patients older than 40 have nearly a 10% incidence of isolated patellofemoral arthritis. Women account for 75% of patients with isolated patellofemoral arthritis.
