Nagchhatri- A Plant in Peril

Rampant extraction and heavy confiscations have generated concerns about “Nagchhatri”. Scientifically referred to as Trillium govanianum Wall. ex. D. Don [Syn. Trillidium govanianum (D. Don) Kunth)], (Family Melanthiaceae), the plant is now selling like a hot cake. Four years back the plant did not even feature amongst the 960 traded medicinal plant species of India. But today it is the most sought after medicinal species of the western Himalayan region.
