Kidney Preservation Strategies for Renal Transplantation

Author(s):

Shiv Charan Navriya

During past few decades’ solid organ transplantation is one of the crucial advances in medical field. To decrease the ischemia-reperfusion injury and to improve graft survival, organ preservation solutions have been used. Ischemia-reperfusion injuries are the significant cause of graft dysfunctions after renal transplantation. This is particularly true for extended pool of donors including expanded criteria donors (ECDs) and donation after cardiac death (DCD), optimizing kidney preservation in these cases is of paramount importance. In this talk I will provide a general review of the principles of graft preservation, current available different solutions for kidney transplantation and recent advances in preservation techniques to improve the quality of transplanted organs.
