Introduction

Gerontology is a broad and multidisciplinary field that examines the biological, psychological, and social processes associated with aging. As societies worldwide experience a rise in the proportion of older adults, understanding the mechanisms of aging has become increasingly crucial. Advances in medicine and public health have contributed to longer life spans, but longevity does not always equate to quality of life. Many older individuals face chronic illnesses, mobility issues, cognitive impairments, and social isolation [1-4].

Biologically, aging involves gradual physiological changes, including cellular decline, reduced immune function, and loss of muscle mass, known as sarcopenia. Psychologically, older adults encounter challenges such as memory decline, depression, and anxiety, often influenced by health status and life transitions. Socially, aging affects family structures, community involvement, employment, and independence [5].

Gerontology provides a comprehensive framework to study these changes, offering insights into promoting healthy aging, designing senior-friendly environments, improving healthcare delivery, and implementing policies that support older populations. Interdisciplinary research in this field integrates medicine, psychology, sociology, nutrition, and technology to better understand aging and foster a holistic approach to elderly care.

Conclusion

Gerontology plays a vital role in addressing the health and social needs of aging populations. By exploring the biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging, researchers and healthcare professionals can develop strategies that enhance independence, functionality, and well-being in older adults. As the number of elderly individuals continues to rise globally, there is a growing need for advancements in geriatric care, preventive interventions, supportive policies, and age-friendly technologies. Understanding aging through the lens of gerontology ensures that societies can support older adults in living longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
