A case of ciliary body mass simulating anterior scleritis

Abstract
Ciliary body masses, known as a group of rare diseases, are hard to diagnose and usually have a bad prognosis. Now no available examinations have the capacity to give an exact diagnosis which can only rely on pathological information. We describe the case of a patient, who complained of persistent redness and blurry vision in his left eye, was found to have a ciliary body mass corresponding to the location of the scleral injection. Trans-scleral incision was performed and the histopathologic examination showed as chronic purulent inflammation of the ciliary body mass. Combined with subsequent anti-inflammatory and anti-infective treatments, the patient remained a useful vision. It is of great importance that when ophthalmologists noticed persistent sectoral scleritis, ciliary body mass should come into mind. As if it can be found in a relatively small size, timely trans-scleral incision combined with systematic and local anti-inflammatory and anti-infective drugs (if histopathologically indicated as inflammatory lesion) may receive good effect.

Yuan Zhao has completed her PhD at the age of 29 years from Fudan University. She is now working in the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of medicine as an ophthalmologist.
