Cranioplasty by using thermoplastic plate: Case series

Abstract


Cranioplasty is the surgical procedure to correct cranial defect and that as certain the protection of underlying brain tissue and restoration of skull normal appearance i.e. cosmetic appearance. Cranial defect can be caused by: Head trauma, especially forceful trauma to a localized area of skull. Penetrant head injury like bullet and shells. Excision of skull bone like tumor weather begins in or malignant, vascular lesion, or infection. Iatrogenic as in decompressed cranioectomy. Cranioplasty can be done by using auto graft from outer table of skull or from the ribs or it can be done by using bone cement or other bone substituent. Our work involve using of thermoplastic plate preoperatively, by taking the negative of the defect and then the piece of the plate molded to the defect, then the plate sterilized and implanted on the defect. Presentation of seven of our worked up cases in Al Emamain medical city, neurosugical unite, with pre intra and postoperative appearance. Advantage include Shorten the time of surgery than other type s of surgery.No any case reported to be infected.No rejection. Gives protection to the underlying brain .Cosmotic appearance near to the normal.Low cost of the used bone substituent material.Improvemet of patient’s psychology and return to the work.
