Abstract

In today’s world, remembering to take your fluids and hydrations at the appropriate times might be challenging. A costly health problem in America - Dehydration represents a potential target for intervention to reduce healthcare expenditures and improve patients’ quality of life. An estimated $5.5 billion of Medicare costs is spent annually for dehydration hospital admissions. Our proposal will primarily focus on applying technology to reduce the burden on our caregivers and improve care and services using Digital Healthcare Solutions like Internet of Things (IoT) enabled solutions for continuous monitoring of people, allowing our senior citizens to stay in their own homes with improved quality of life, at an affordable cost. The RPM (remote patient monitoring) technology solution is a connected digital health platform that will use data and behavioral science to improve hydration adherence for our senior citizens. We plan to develop straightforward usable technologies supporting independent living and everyday tasks at home, especially hydration, without using complicated and costly electronics and mechanical systems. The goal is developing interventions to remediate age-related cognitive decline to drink enough fluids, using technology platforms widely accepted among older adults like smart speakers, smart bulbs, smart LED displays and timely reminder robocalls. A priority is to seamlessly inform family members and care providers with customizable alerts for periodic intervention. The final goal is evaluating the outcome of VodaTrac usability and alerts among patients, families, and nursing home staff. Status Alert LLC will have implemented the VodaTrac technology in a long-term care facility environment, received feedback on the hardware and software platform from caregivers, and assessed the correlation of timely hydration with an increased patient quality of life. Our efforts will focus on constructing Artificial Intelligence machine learning algorithms using data and findings of correlation, creating a predictive model around predicting effective alerts without alert fatigue, and implementing the solution within a long-term study in multiple long-term care facilities serving our senior citizens.
