Abstract

Introduction: Spine tumors are a pathology that may be underdiagnosed. The data on spine tumors is very limited around the world. However, our institution in Colombia is getting the reward of being one of the hospitals that received more spinal tumors, being from being to malignant type. In this paper, we want to describe our experience with the management of benign and malignant tumors in our institution in Colombia, because our institution has the challenging possibility of being one of the reference centers for this type of pathology. We will like to show the evolution of the treatment in our service over the last two years. Methods: We collect all the information regarding patients that have entered the emergency room between August 2016 and December 2018. We collect all the information of adults between 18 and 75 years. We obtain all the respective authorizations and consent from the patients. We analyze the pathology reports and confirm most of them with neuropathology. We analyze and describe the results, Barthel scale pre and pop immediately month 1 and 3. We analyze the Takahashi scale and Tomita score as well the Weinstein-Boriani-Biagini surgical staging system. Discussion: We obtain a result of 57 spine tumors, with a mean age of 38 years old, with a relation of 2:1 in women. The percentage of benign tumors was 70% and malignant tumors 30%, the Barthel mean progress was from 30 to 70. The most frequent tumor was multiple myeloma in women and metastatic prostate cancer in men. Conclusion: In the past few days we are receiving more patients from different parts of the country with spine tumors. However, we have limited resources for the use of technology that could benefit the patients; however with the resources we have we have developed an excellent surgical group that the results talk by themself. All the countries have to develop strategies for the early diagnose of this type of tumors and to make connections with the industry to obtain more technology that could bring better results for the patients.
