Management of Odontoid Type II Fractures through anterior approach: 5 years experience in regional hospital in Colombia

Abstract


Spine trauma has been increasing in our population because of the new era of high-risk sports, increase in people performing sports, and increase in elderly people practicing exercise. In our Hospital, that is a center of reference in Boyaca, Colombiam we perform between 15 to 20 trauma spine surgeries of the 60 spine surgeries that we performed monthly. Of these trauma spine surgeries, we have experiences in the last 5 years and increase in odontoid type II fractures; we had performed a total of 20 anterior cervical approach surgery for the management of this type II fracture. Of the 20 cases 2 had to get additional posterior approach because of the fragment displacement. One case had to be re-operated because of bleeding in the surgical wound. The age of surgery is between 17 to 87 years old. The rate male: female is 2:1. The days of hospitalization were 10.5 because of delay of sending the materials. The days in ICU after surgery were 1. The patients return to their homes at 3 days after surgery approximately. The return to their work was at 1.5 months after trauma. This type of surgery is a very secure procedure that needs training, but has excellent results, and has minimum morbidity. This type of surgery gives another possibility of treatment for odontoid fractures.

Biography


Juan Manuel Rodriguez Gil has his expertise in evaluation and passion in improving the health and wellbeing. He studied medicine in Rosario University in Bogota Colombia following this he work with the Red Cross doing his year of community service in Villavicencio, Colombia. After that he studied Neurosurgery in Bogotá Colombia in the Rosario University. He had his studies in spine surgery between 2015 and 2018. He is a member of Aospine, NASS, and Colombian Neurosurgical Association, He works in Colombia as Spine Surgeon.
