Percutaneous Endoscopic Transforaminal Discectomy, experience of 300 cases

Abstract
The endoscopic approach for Lumbar Discectomy was introduced in the clinical practice in 1980 to remove the prolapsed disc and decompress nerve using the least disruptive surgical technique. Over the years, thanks to the technical development either in the quality of images or the development of different instrumentations there has been a huge spreading of endoscope use across the different surgical fields. As a minimally invasive spinal procedure, Percutaneous Endoscopic Transforaminal Discectomy has gained more interest since it requires only an 8-mm skin incision, and damage of the paravertebral muscles would be the minimum, it would be the least invasive spinal surgery at present. We presented a series of 300 cases of Lumbar Disc Herniation managed surgically only by a Percutaneous Transforaminal Endoscopic technique in two units and by the same team. We found by our experience that Transformational Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy as a treatment option for Lumbar Disc Herniation is an effective option with a small incision, quick recovery, short hospital stay, and excellent clinical outcome compared to either open surgery or other minimally invasive procedures.
Biography
Jinhwa Eum is a Korean board-certified Neurosurgeon who has performed Spine Surgeries for over 30 years. Beginning PELD in 1995, he has performed about 4,000 Biportal Endoscopic Spine Surgeries for 25 years (55% Lumbar Discectomy, 30% decompression for stenosis, 10% endoscopic TLIF, 5% cervical discectomy). He has also taught many aspiring Spine Surgeons from China, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, and Greece through lectures and cadaver workshops. Since 2016, he has published multiple articles about Unilateral Biportal Endoscopic Surgery, with his most recent being “Modified Far Lateral Endoscopic TLIF (extreme TLIF for large cage)” on Feb 19th, 2021 on Acta Neurochirurgica. Currently, he is the Executive Director of KOMISS and KOSESS and the chairman of Korea UBE (Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy) Society.
