Precision medicine approach of the Yao minority nationality in China

Abstract
The Yao minority medicine approaches have been systematized some 250 years ago. Their medicinal experiences maybe reevaluated using the term of personalized medicine. The key strategy is the concept and practice of individual syndromebased analyses. For example, the experience of a syndrome- -defined diagnosis thinking for successful treatment of SARS. The idea was the strong infectious behavior of SARS patients to be very similar to the severe infectious diseases observed for the disease syndromes of Yao’s tribes humid, highly toxic and pathogenic microbe climates and social environment of the Yao minority in southwestern China. Dr. Qin used strong anti-inflammatory medicinal herbs in a high dosage and timely delivery way for SARS treatment. The results have literally helped/saved 31 SARS patients, and this achievement of Dr. Qin was recognized as an anti-SARS hero in China in 2003. Now, we know that, after close to 15 years of research later, the SARS virus per se does not kill people, but it is the “cytokine storm (IL-6, IL-1 & TNF-α burst)” that inflamed after viral infection and killed the patients. Hence, good strong, timely anti-inflammatory medicinal herbs did the job. And these medicinal approaches were used for more than 200 years for many highly infectious diseases, just similar to the treatment of SARS patients. Clinical results from SARS experience of Dr. Qin’s group, showing convincingly “yes, it works” were wide spread socially. And Dr. Qin was recognized as the key anti-SARS doctor in China. Later he was recognized by the Chinese government formally in 2012. Dr. Qin also showed that Yao’s herbal medicines were similarly useful for treating cancer patients. Again, many patients were effectively treated or helped for quality of life during the late stages of various cancerous diseases. So, what is the logical reasoning of the treatment? Dr. Qin’s group recognized and employed the strategy for treating the highly inflammatory syndromes in late cancer patients, using a spectrum of medicinal herbs. These strategies have now been shown to be a new translational medicine approach, as have now been demonstrated today in a number of our recent scientific papers. Dr. Qin’s therapeutic approaches are also now echoed and recognized by the anti-inflammatory TCM approaches by a volume of research findings from Drs. Y.C. Chen (Yale Univ., Med. School), N.S. Yang (Academia Sinica, Taiwan), T. Efferth (Maine Univ., Germany), and R. Huang (Johns Hopkins Univ.) in the last 10 years. And Dr. Qin’s group was named and recognized as the top 10 anti-cancer frontier medical fighters of China, endorsed and honored by the government.
Biography
Qin. Xunyun is the Professor and Chief Yao doctor. He has engaged in clinical research and practice of Yao medicine for more than 40 years, and is good at combining the Yao characteristic medical skill with modern medicine to treat tumors, immune diseases, rheumatic immune diseases, skin ailments and other major diseases. He is the editor- in-chief of "Chinese Yao Medicine", "Chinese Yao Pharmacy”, "Practical Yao Medicine" and other Yao medicine works and textbooks for over 10 million words. He is the editor-in-chief of the first Chinese textbook series of Yao medicine, and has published more than 50 papers in national journals that won awards. He also is a chief expert of Yao Medicine with medical, scientific research, education and health care.
