Treatment of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis with the HQ (Hernandez and Quintana) interbody screw, with Minimally Invasive Technique

Abstract
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis is a frequent ailment that affects people over 50 years. With previous studies by J. Zucherman, and the cadaveric investigations with maximum flexion and extension by W. Rauschning, it was demonstrated that the bulging of the posterior longitudinal ligament and the ligamentum flavum were the main causes of radicular compression; but, the key aspect was that once the interbody space was expanded, the compression was relieved. However, posterior stabilization and interbody arthrodesis should be performed. In this study there were 128 patients divided into 2 groups; the technique was to introduce interbody spacers through Kambin’s triangle. In the first group, the interbody space was opened with Zeus peek spacers, and in the second group, the titanium HQ (Hernández and Quintana) screw was used. The results were good in 85% of the patients with the peek spacers and 90% for the second group with the HQ screw. It was found that the screw spacers were much more stable than the regular spacers, thus presenting far fewer complications.
Biography
Eduardo Modiano is an Orthopedic Surgeon specialized in Spine surgery and Pediatric orthopedics. He is specialized in Orthopedics in the American British Cowdry (ABC) hospital in Mexico City, Spine Surgery in Dr. German Diaz Lombardo Hospital founded by Dr. Eduardo Luque, and Pediatric Orthopedics in the National Rehabilitation Institute in Mexico City. Currently working as a Spine Surgeon in Mexico City at “Hospital Ángeles Universidad”, as well as an academic at the Anahuac University teaching Orthopedics. Eduardo Modiano has Enrolled in the Mexican College of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is currently a member of the Mexican Association of Spine Surgeons as well as a member of the Mexican Society of Minimally Invasive and Endoscopic Spine Surgery. Collaborating with Dr. Braulio Hernandez in the study of the HQ Screw and doing further research in the uses and biomechanics we can achieve in different Spinal Disorders. We are currently working on a new biomechanical study that will further improve is functionality.
