About Periodontics

Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes and the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues. Periodontist is a dentist who is specialized treating diseases including supporting and investing structures of the teeth including alveolar bone, cementum, gums and periodontium. It also deals with diseases and conditions which affect the supporting structures/teeth. Periodontics also deals with the dental implants and peri-implantitis. Periodontology is a sub-classification of dentistry which studies the disease and infections affecting them. . The causes of periodontal diseases can be the bacterial plaque accumulation as well as some host immunological factors which lead to the destruction of the supporting bones around the teeth.
