High-Resolution Pulse Oximetry: Cost Effective Tool to Screen Sleep-Disordered Breathing in the Hospitalized Patients

Sleep Disordered breathing (SDB) is a highly prevalent disorder (6-13%) with significant cardiovascular implications. Hospitalized patients have significant under-diagnosed SDB. Under-recognition of this important co-morbidity may have deleterious effects including influence on re-admission rates. However, until recently there was no simple cost effective test to screen for SDB in the hospitalized patients. Recently, advances in plythesmography technology, most notably in ability to reduce averaging time and filter artifacts has allowed the possibility of having a cost effective strategy of screening SDB in hospitalized patients.
