Biography

Dr. Arcady A. Putilov is an expert on rhythmic phenomena in living nature. He also conducted scientific investigations in such areas as basic principles of individual variation in the domains of chronophysiology and psychology, evolutionary psychology, comparative psychology, ethology, ecology of animal species’ communities, occupational and environmental medicine, psychopathology, biological psychiatry, psychophysiology, and history, methodology and sociology of science. He received his first PhD (Doctoral Candidate) in animal and human physiology from the Institute of Physiology (Novosibirsk) in 1985, and he received his second PhD (Doctor of Science) in normal physiology from the Siberian Medical University (Tomsk) in 1999. After graduating from the State University of Tomsk in 1976 (MD in zoology), Dr. Putilov was affiliated with the Institute of Physiology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Novosibirsk). In 1995-1999, he was affiliated with the Institute for General Pathology and Human Ecology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Novosibirsk) and with the International Scientific Center ARKTIKA of the Far-East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Magadan) and of the University of Alaska (Anchorage). Currently, he serves as chief researcher at the Research Institute for Molecular Biology and Biophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, (Novosibirsk; the former Institute for Medical and Biological Cybernetics). His experimental investigations at the Institute were supported by the research grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and from the Russian Foundation for Humanities. For more than 20 years, Dr. Putilov has served as a member of editorial board of Biological Rhythm Research (Former Journal of Interdisciplinary Cycle Research). More currently, he joined the editorial boards of several online journals, and served as Lead Guest Editor of the online journal Sleep Disorders. He is a member of several professional societies, including the Society for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms, the European Society for Chronobiology, the Melatonin Club, the European Sleep Research Society, the International Society for Human Ethology, the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences, the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and the Working Time Society. His reports on different research topics appeared in several Russian-language journals between 1976 and 1992 (Ecologija, Fiziologija Cheloveka, Socis, Biofizika, Zoologicheskii Zhurnal, Psychologicheskii Zhurnal, Medizhinskaja Kibernetika, Klinicheskaja Medizina, Aviakosmicheskaja i Ekologicheskaja Medizina, Izvestija Sibirskogo Otdeleniia Akademii Nauk SSSR, Vestnik Akademii Medizinskich Nauk SSSR, etc.). The results of his early researches on rhythmic phenomena were summarized in the monograph Systemforming Function of Synchronization in the Living Nature (Science: Novosibirsk, 1987). His more recent results on basic principles of individual variation were reported in the monograph Geometry of Individual Variation in Personality and Sleep-Wake Adaptability (Nova Science Pub Inc: New York, 2011). Since 1991, he published more than 40 scientific articles on chronobiology, somnology, and biological psychiatry in peer reviewed international journals (Chronobiology International, Biological Rhythm Research, Somnologie, Neuropsychopharmacology, Ergonomia, World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, Psychiatry Research, Advances in Experimental and Medical Biology, Psychopathology, Arctic Medical Research, etc.), Along with writing scientific reports in English, he is also writing in Russian for the general public about sleep, biological rhythms, and seasonal depression (i.e., "Larks", "Owls" and Other…, 1987, 1st edn, 2003, 2nd edn, and 2005, 3rd edn). Dr. Putilov has long-term experience in giving lectures for academic, student and lay audiences. Since 1993, he has been lecturing at the Humanitarian Academy of Siberia, the Classical Institute, and the Novosibirsk State University (Novosibirsk). In 2001-2003, his work on a textbook on evolutionary psychology (Human zoological psychology: Mind of men and women in the mirror of evolution) was supported by a grant from the Russian Foundation for Humanities, and in 2002-2004 he organized a series of the international Siberian Indian Summer Schools on Human Ethology (www.ethology.nsu.ru). Dr. Putilov is supervising scientific researches of undergraduate students, PhD students, and young investigators. Results of some of these researches were awarded by the Academia Europeae (1994), the Society for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms (1997), and the International Society for Human Ethology (2003).
