Biography
Dr. Theophilus Benjamin Kwofie is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Clinical Microbiology of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana. He holds a MSc. Degree in Molecular Biology (Kyorin University) and a PhD degree in Virology (Kyoto University), both universities in Japan. Prior to this he worked with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Legon in Accra from 1980 to 1992 as a laboratory Technician.
Dr. Kwofie’s academic research interest had been on the Pathogenesis of HIV, specifically in the area of using the Simian and Human Immunodeficiency (SHIV) Chimeric Viruses and Rhesus Macaque Monkey models in the development of HIV vaccine. More specifically in the area of delineating the mechanisms and factors that enable SHIV (HIV) to persist and replicate to high titers in the face of sometimes robust host immune response and also whether Cytokines and Chemokines can be used to distinguish between the pathogenicities of SHIVs (HIVs).
