Biography
Serena Tonstad M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D. is head physician at the Preventive Cardiology section, Department of Endocrinology, Obesity and Preventive Medicine at Oslo University Hospital, Oslo, Norway. She also holds appointments as professor of Health Promotion and Education at the School of Public Health, Loma Linda University and Medicine at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. She is a practicing clinician and international expert in preventive cardiology with expertise in obesity, lipidology and smoking cessation.
Dr Tonstad completed her medical training at Loma Linda University in 1979. She is board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine since 1990. From 1990 -1997, she practiced at the Lipid Clinic in Oslo, Norway and completed a PhD on the treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia in children.
She is an associate editor of the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease and of Nicotine & Tobacco Research. She is a past president of the Norwegian Association for Study of Obesity (1999-2006) and has been awarded lifelong honorary membership.
