Biography
Alec Vahanian is current Head of the Cardiology Department at Bichat Hospital in Paris, and Professor of Cardiology, University Paris VII. Completing his medical education and cardiology residency in Paris, he became Chef de Clinique at University Paris VI in 1979, and Professor of Cardiology in 1988. He served as Head of Cardiology at Hospital Tenon from 1994 to 1999 and has been Head of Cardiology at Hospital Bichat since1999. His research interests include valvular heart disease, percutaneous valve interventions, acute coronary syndromes, antithrombotic treatment, and interventional management. Prof. Vahanian is a member of the European Society of Cardiology, where he holds various key roles, the French Society of Cardiology, the European Association of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and a corresponding member of the National Academy of Medicine. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), and former President of the French Federation of Cardiology (2003–2007). He is a member of the editorial committee and reviewer of numerous scientific journals, Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal, and has published ~450 articles in peer-reviewed journals and participated in 50 textbooks.
