Dr. Wilson Winstons Muhwezi is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University-Kampala. He graduated with a Second Upper, Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Social Administration [BA(SWSA) Hons] from Makerere University in 1993, an MPhil (Health Promotion) from The Psychology Faculty, University of Bergen, Norway in (1998) and a Joint PhD (Medical Science) from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden and Makerere University in 2007 with majors in social epidemiology of mental health problems and application of Behavioural Sciences in healthcare. After completion of his PhD, he won a Sida/SAREC post-doctoral research grant (2010 – 2014) to investigate Sexuality, Mental well-being and Reproductive Health Decisions among adolescents perinatally infected with HIV in Uganda. From 2009 – 2010, he was an active researcher on the Makerere University-Johns Hopkins University Bill Gates Leaning Grant that evaluated the Role of Community-Based Training in Addressing Emerging and Current Health Problems in Uganda. He is a Co-Investigator in an on-going (2010 – 2014) Cluster Randomized Controlled Intervention Trial to evaluate the promotion of parent-child communication on sexual and reproductive health among young adolescents in Kampala and Wakiso districts. This is a sub-study in a project titled “Promoting healthy sexual behaviour among adolescents in southern and eastern Africa – mobilising schools, parents and communities” (PREPARE) funded by the European Commission and implemented in Uganda by the Child Health and Development Centre, Makerere University College of Health Sciences. In 2004, he was a Co-Investigator in a project titled “NGOs bridging the gap: AFXB support to the education of orphans in Luwero district, Uganda” supported by The Applied Research on Child Health (ARCH) from the Centre for International Health (CIHD) at Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH). He was also an active participant in training health workers in identification, management and referral of mentally ill patients implemented by the Department of Psychiatry and funded by Makerere University and Rockefeller Foundation Capacity Building for decentralization grant (2000). His research focus is on the design, implementation and analysis of studies on mental health, family dynamics (orphan-hood), adolescent sexual behaviours, sexual and reproductive health and trauma. He has a wealth of over 15 years of experience in design and implementation of socio-economic surveys in the fields of psychosocial work, mental health and reproductive health. The uniqueness of his experience arises from his involvement with all matters that straddle social sciences and health sciences. He is comfortable in working with multi-disciplinary teams. Most of his recent research works have been published in peer-reviewed international journals. He has contributed to Makerere University College of Health Sciences since 1993 through teaching, student supervision, research, and patient care. He teaches Medical Sociology and Anthropology, Social and Trans-cultural Psychiatry, Foundations of Behavioural Sciences and serves as a Guest Lecturer on courses in Makerere University School of Public Health. He is an active tutor in Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Community Based Education and Service (COBES). He has supervised a number of graduate students to completion. He has served on the School of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee (SOMREC) and is a regular reviewer for several journals. He is a Board Member of Communication for Development Foundation Uganda (CDFU) and a Research Fellow with ACODE and a Trainer in Management of Mental Disorders in the Community. He was a Child Welfare Coordinator of Nakasero Child Development Centre, an indigenous NGO. He is a Research Adviser for the Coalition for Health Promotion and Social Development (HEPS-Uganda).
