Better Plants-Better Biorefining: A Personal Perspective

The developments in plant science are beginning to significantly change our vision of what is possible for the biorefining of plant material. It is clear that we no longer need to ‘settle’ for native plants and their bioresources, which in turn often lead to costly and expensive fractionation and deconstruction technologies. Although the farmer and consumer have benefitted from numerous transgenic plants with superior food and textile products, it has taken some time for the research community to fully focus its efforts on improving the biorefining potential of agro-energy crops, forests and plant residues
