Psychiatric Disorders In Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy Compared With Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients

Introduction: Depression and anxiety represent a common pathway for patients presenting with Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (TTC) and Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) although differences in prevalence and their potential relation to cardiac disease onset remain to be described. Method and Results: 41 consecutive female patients with diagnosis of TTC were prospectively enrolled and compared with 82 consecutive age/sex matched patients with ACS as control group in a 1:2 fashion. Prevalence of psychological disorder was significantly higher in TTC patients compared with ACS (49% vs 26% p=0.01). In the subgroup with psychological disease, patients with TTC were more often anxious, while patients with ACS were more often affected by depression (80% vs 38% and 15% vs 48% respectively, p=0.02).
