Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is a dreaded gastrointestinal disease in neonates, mainly preterm neonates. It needs multipronged approach for the treatment and prevention. The first case was reported in 1823. But till now there is hardly any definite treatment in advanced stages, and prevention has the main role.
In NEC, the intestinal mucosa actually dies, becomes totally necrosed soggy and dies off. What is the actual cause of this death and why it is more prevalent in preterm, is not fully clear. Some of the recent research has thrown some lights on it. There is a great role of Toll like receptor 4 (TLR-4) for the pathogenesis.
