Biography

Dr Tan Eng Loy is a senior consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Singapore General Hospital. His interests include high risk pregnancies, intrapartum obstetrics, electronic fetal monitoring, obstetric emergencies and trauma in pregnant women. He is actively involved in undergraduate and post-graduate training within his department and conducts regular obstetric emergency drills and courses for medical and nursing staff. He is an experienced instructor on obstetric simulation courses such as the Managing Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma (MOET) course as well as on the PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training (PROMPT) course, having taught on courses in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Interstitial Implantation of the Placenta presenting with Retained Placenta after Vaginal Delivery at Term

We report an unusual case of an interstitially-implanted pregnancy presenting with retained placenta after normal vaginal delivery of a live fetus at term. A 32 year-old primigravida, with no previous uterine surgery or instrumentation underwent induction of labour at term for suspected intrauterine growth retardation. The placenta was retained after normal vaginal delivery. Manual removal of the placenta under anaesthesia was attempted but unsuccessful.
