Cross-sectional studies provide some direction on the underlying training adaptations. The development of accurate and reliable non-invasive stroke volume (SV) measurement techniques helped differentiate endurance trained subjects who presented larger maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) than sedentary and moderately trained people.
