A Case of Inguinal Hernia Cured with Homoeopathic Remedy-Thuja Occidentalis

Abstract

An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of abdominal-cavity contents through the inguinal canal. This may include pain or discomfort especially with coughing, exercise, or bowel movement. In children, a hernia present as bulges in the groin area which become more prominent and protrudes during muscular stretching like coughing, crying, straining, or standing up; getting worse throughout and feels better while resting. In the present case, a male child aged one and a half years old presented with swelling of left testicle on 30/5/2016. He had been suffering from the complaint since 2 months. According to the child’s mother, the swelling got worse on passing stool, urinating and while crying. By considering symptoms, mental generals and particulars; Homeopathic remedy Thuja Occidentalis was given. The complaints got cleared and there were no recurrence after 18-6-2016.

Case Summary

A case reported was a swelling in left scrotum since 2 months. By this case was diagnosed as inguinal hernia. By considering mental generals and particulars Thuja Occidentalis is given. There is no recurrence of complaint after 18 -6-2016

A Case of inguinal hernia

An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of abdominal-cavity contents through the inguinal canal. This may include pain or discomfort especially with coughing, exercise, or bowel movement. In children it will protrude while crying. Often it gets worse throughout the day and improves when lying down. A bulging area may occur that becomes larger when bearing down. Hernias present as bulges in the groin area that can become more prominent when coughing, straining, or standing up. They are rarely painful, and the bulge commonly disappears on lying down. By considering mental generals and particulars Thuja Occidentalis is given. There is no recurrence of complaint after 18-6-2016 (Figures 1 and 2).

Introduction

An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of abdominal cavity contents through the inguinal canal [1]. Inguinal hernias occur more often on the right than left side [2]. The main concern is strangulation, where the blood supply to the part of the intestine is blocked. This usually produces severe pain and tenderness of the area.

Signs and symptoms

Pain or discomfort especially with coughing, exercise, or bowel movement.

Bulges in the groin area that can become more prominent when straining or standing up. It gets worse throughout the day and improves when lying down.

A bulging area may occur that becomes larger when bearing down [3,4].

Case Report

Anemia: No pallor Pulse rate - 80/min

Jaundice: Not icteric Res rate – 18/min

Cyanosis: Nil Body weight – 9kg

Clubbing: Nil

Edema: Nil

Lymphadenopathy: Nil

Systemic examination of swelling

a. Size and shape of the Swelling-pear shaped.

b. Position and extent-extends upto the scrotum.

c. Visible peristalsis-absent.

d. Skin over the swelling - normal.

e. Impulse on coughing - expansible cough impulse.

f. Position of penis - normal.

Palpation

a. Temperature - normal.

b. Tenderness - absent.

c. Surface - normal.

d. Edge-well defined.

e. Position and extent-extends into the scrotum.

f. Consistency- elastic.

g. Cough reflex-expansible impulse palpable.

Percussion

a. Resonant note

Intervention

a. Homeopathic medicine Thuja Occidentalis is given [5-8].

Case Discharge Summary

A male child aged one and a half years old presented with swelling of left testicle on 30/5/2016. He had been suffering from the complaint for 2 months. According to the child’s mother, the swelling got worse on passing stool and urine, after crying. The child often screamed before micturation. Came to hospital at causality on 30/5/2016. He is better from his complaints after treated with Thuja Occidentalis. He have no recurrence of complaints 18/6/2016.

Conclusion

The patient complaints of swelling in left testicle on 30/5/2016. He had been suffering from the complaint for 2 months. He came to hospital at causality on 30/5/2016. He is better from his complaints after treated with Thuja Occidentalis. He has no recurrence of complaints after 18/6/2016.

In Synthesis repertory, the rubric “Abdomen-Hernia-Abdominalinguinal- children, in-left” gives the medicines, Nux vomica and Thuja. Thuja was earlier proved to be effective in many cases of inguinal hernia in children [5,6].

In Knerr’s Repertory, Abdomen-Inguinal region-Hernia- Infantile, left side, better thigh flexed on abdomen, worse on pressure gives the medicine Thuja [9,10].
