Abstract

Statistics reveal there are 7.7 million new cases of dementia each year indicating a new case of dementia somewhere in the world every four seconds (Prasadarao & Merrick, 2016). This study aimed to identify the level of knowledge about dementia and to examine attitudes towards dementia and persons with dementia in undergraduate nursing students. The research study was a prospective cohort, a web-based online survey with a target population of nursing students enrolled in the 4th semester of their nursing program at Fresno State University. Preliminary findings from this study have shown significant implications in identifying knowledge gaps of nursing students, understanding their attitudes toward dementia and in developing curriculum to enhance the nursing students’ skills, knowledge and attitudes in the context of providing quality and evidence-based care to persons with dementia. This study will also have implications in developing specific training programmes once we determine the current knowledge and attitudes of the large, diverse and accessible population of nursing students.
