Abstract

Craniofacial surgery is an area of activity requiring a large multidisciplinary team, including a number of surgical as well as nonsurgical specialty input. With the possible exception of aesthetic considerations, the orbit and the ocular structures are more involved in craniofacial deformities than any other. The visual system may be involved primarily or secondarily in a craniofacial deformation. The craniofacial deformities are seen in association with various syndromes however non syndromic causes also exist. Several of these can lead to optic atrophy, progressive optic nerve dysfunction, uncorrected refractive errors, strabismus, ptosis, and corneal exposure problems which can lead to visual impairment. Because these are avoidable if recognized and managed early, the management of these conditions requires close working between the craniofacial surgeon and ophthalmologist.
