Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of critical thinking and self-concept on stress adaptation in transfer nursing students. For this study, data were collected from 196 transfer nursing students from Busan and South Gyeongsang Province. Data collection was done during the period from September to December, 2015. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients. Critical thinking of the subjects was 3.69 points out of 5 points. The sub-categories were in order of objectivity, prudence, intellectual eagerness/curiosity, self-confidence, healthy skepticism, intellectual integrity and systematicity. Self-esteem was 2.67 points and stress adaptation was 2.53 points out of 4 points. The sub-categories of stress adaptation was the highest in social support pursuit adaptation, followed by desire thought adaptation, problem focused adaptation, emotional focused stress adaptation. Active adaptation (31.5 points) was higher than the passive adaptation (29.2 points). The results showed that critical thinking on gender (t=2.48, p=0.014), age (F=2.90, p=0.044) and club activities (t=2.05, p=0.041) were significant. Stress adaptation was significant according to academic year (F=3.81, p=0.025). Critical thinking, self-concept and stress adaptation had positive correlations. Findings indicate that college adjustment for transfer nursing students could be enhanced through the development of programs to promote critical thinking and self-concept in the nursing curriculum. Based on the results of this study, it is meaningful to investigate that the transfer students' adaptability to university life can be improved and that they can be utilized as basic data for guidance and interview of transfer students.
