Abstract

Health care is an industry that continues to grow in size and complexity (Palmer & Short (2014). Consequently, in an everchanging, dynamic environment the health care sector does, and will continue to rely heavily on highly qualified health care leaders who are able to lead in an environment of change, adaptation and innovation (Lussier & Achua, 2016). Where health care leaders and managers previously occupied a position of hierarchical authority, community and other stakeholder expectations now require active partnering with consumers to optimise health outcomes and to meet industry needs (Charlesworth, Jamieson, Davey & Butler, 2016). Hence, there is a need for continual re-assessment of the competencies and behaviours required of leaders today in meeting the many challenges that arise (Kouzes & Posner, 2017. In this workshop we will: evaluate the characteristics of a selection of leadership frameworks; analyse how leadership frameworks can be used to create strategies for practice improvement in a health care environment; and develop a leadership framework that is applicable to a healthcare setting. Leadership frameworks provide opportunity for leaders to assess and re-evaluate the qualities, competencies and rolemodelling behaviors that are required to lead and mentor others into the future (Gopee, 2017; Nel, et al., 2017).
