Development and evaluation of a complex interprofessional training program to improve patient safety (KOMPAS)

Abstract


Background: Patient safety is essential for high quality healthcare. Medical teams require specific basic skills to maintain safe care. These are already defined in various learning objectives for the health professions (WHO 2016). Yet, no evidence based, interprofessional training program for developing these skills exists.

Aim: In order to improve patient safety, a needs-based, a multimodal and interprofessional training program for health care teams will be developed, along with implementation and evaluation in clinical practice.

Methods: The training program consists of two parts: an eLearning module that enables individual and self-regulated learning, as well as an interprofessional, behavior-based team training regarding the three topics teamwork, error management and patient involvement. This complex intervention will be evaluated in 36 hospital units within the regions all around Germany. The intervention involves three groups: group A receives eLearning, group B receives eLearning combined with deepened interprofessional team training and group C (waiting control group) receives intervention after completion of data collection. Effects of this complex intervention will be evaluated by staff surveys at three measurement times.

Results: First results are expected in summer 2018 (baseline). We hypothesize that group B has the most improved patient safety skills to maintain safe care due to participating in the multimodal training compared with group A and group C.
