Effect of pre-transport bundle on thermoregulation of preterm neonates during transportation in neonatal units

Abstract
Pre term neonates are vulnerable to develop hypothermia after birth due to their physical handicaps to maintain normal body temperature. Evidence from various studies demonstrate incidence of hypothermia during transportation of pre term neonates from one unit to another. Inability to maintain thermal stability during transportation results in cardiac, respiratory and metabolic events. This study focused on thermoregulation of pre term neonates (<35weeks of gestation) while transportation by implementing pre transport bundle consisting of cap for head insulation, pre transport stabilization of baby and incubator and embrace to prevent hypothermia in pre term neonates. This study was conducted in neonatal units of Nehru hospital PGIMER, Chandigarh. The primary objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of pre transport bundle on thermoregulation of pre term neonates during transportation in neonatal units. There were 2 groups in the study, one control (n=30) and one experimental (n=30). Results revealed that there is a statistically significant effect of pre transport bundle on thermoregulation of pre term neonates during transportation in neonatal units (p<0.01). Mean temperature (axillary) at arrival in neonatal intensive care units was higher in experimental group as compared to control group (p<0.01). Thus the present study strongly supports the use of pre transport bundle during transportation of pre term neonates in neonatal units to prevent them from hypothermia.

Sukhwinder Kaur has completed her PhD from PGIMER Chandigarh and working as a Lecturer at National Institute of Nursing Education PGIMER, Chandigarh since. Her area of interest is Child Health, Neonatal health and women health. She has presented number of scientific papers in National and International Conferences at Japan, London, Madrid Spain and Las Vegas USA and received 7 Best paper awards. She is life member of ten professional bodies. She is Recipient of Glory of India Award, Rashtriya Gaurav Award, Bharat Vibhushan Samman Puraskar Global Achievers Award for Education Excellence. He has published more than 40 papers in National and International journals.
