Abstract

Nursing instruction is a key to ensure patients with breast cancer to have adequate knowledge for better recovery after surgeries. A survey was conducted prior to the project using 5-point Likert scale where 5 indicates very satisfied and 1 indicates very dissatisfied. The result showed that the completion rates of the postoperative nursing instructions for patients who underwent breast cancer surgeries were 45.76%, whereas the patients reported level of satisfaction about the postoperative nursing instructions was 3.9. In order to enhance self-care abilities of patients with breast cancer, the purpose of this project was to improve the completion of postoperative nursing instruction. The measurements were proposed and executed from November 2016 to June 2017, which includes: (1) Developed a standard care guideline and a nursing instruction checklist for postoperative breast cancer patients, (2) hold nursing continuing educational programs about postoperative breast cancer patient care, (3) made a multimedia educational DVD, (4) established a rehabilitation consult flow chart, and (5) created a rehabilitation exercise instructions booklet. After the implementation of the project, the completion rates of the postoperative nursing instructions increased to 89.20%. Additionally, the patients’ level of satisfaction increased to 4.7. In conclusion, the project effectively improved the completion of nursing interventions for patients with breast cancer.
