Evaluation the over-the-counter skin whitening products use among patients with melasma by community pharmacist in Libya

Abstract


Background: Melasma is an acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation that typically presents as irregular pigmented spot on the sun-exposed areas of skin, especially on the face and neck, Treatment of Melasma include local application, oral medication, laser therapy. Over-the-counter Whiting Skin care products contain a variety of active ingredients for example (Niacinamide, Vitamin C, and Arbutin), which are widely concerned and first choice by community pharmacist because of high safety, good tolerance and the effect of improving the damaged skin barrier. Objective: The primary aims of this study to assess knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of Libyan community pharmacists and patients toward Over-The-counter (OTC) Skin care whitening products in melisma treatment Methods: Two different questionnaires were designed; the first one was distributed to 153 patients with a disorder of Melasma and the second designed to pharmacists (n=203) surveyed their knowledge and basic skills of choice and use OTC Whiting products for patients. Results: The results showed that 72% of the patients diagnoses with Melasma reported use of OTC medication. And 44% reported use prescription medication, Alpha Arbutin was the most commonly active ingredient was synthetically and therapeutically of OTC whitening products dispensed by community pharmacist.. Conclusion: Over-the counter skin whitening care products have played different roles in the prevention and treatment of melisma. Recent Publications: 1. Alseid S, Elmahjoubi E, Rghebi N.
