Exploring the influence of developing disease positive response for lung cancer patients by patient support group

Abstract
Since 2008, Taiwan has promoted lung cancer case management system to guide the treatment of lung cancer patients, such as guiding patients to seek medical treatment smoothly and providing a single contact window for consultation service. During the management process, patients are observed to be full of fear, uncertainty of treatment and bewilderment and unknown to deal with adverse effects. A lung cancer patient support group was established in 2014, then a study was conducted through focus group and the results of the study were significantly positive correlation in patients sense of hope, social support and family resilience (P<0.001). Through the focus group activity, patients can coexist with the disease, relieve the pressure of fear on disease relapse and death, re-examine his life style, get new enlightenment, redefine new meaning to life and are will to continue to receive treatment challenges. From 2014 to2017, patients participating in the patient supporting group activities were continued increasing. The numbers of patients were increased from 196 in 2014, 232 in 2015, 276 in 2016 and to 333 in 2017. In addition, new patients kept joining the activities. Moreover, the first time outing for patients and families led by medical staffs was held in 2017 and the overall satisfaction was up to 95% recognized by both patients and family. Due to the high cohesiveness of the group, a hospital-specific lung cancer support group LINE instant messaging group to firstly created to allow patients and families on interaction and experience sharing.

Chia-Miao Liao is a Registered Nurse and Case Manager of Lung Cancer in Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. Her research interests are on evidencebased nursing practice and oncology nursing.
