Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to examine the correlation between hope and factors associated with hope in 240 Iranian mothers of children with cancer in 2018 in a children’s hospital in Iran. A two-part questionnaire consisting of mothers’ socio-demographic information and child’s clinical characteristics in conjunction with 12-item Herth Hope Index (HHI) instrument was used to measure the impacts of factors such as, mother’s spirituality, psychosocial and emotional support and the family financial situation, along with child’s diagnosis, prognostic information, length of time since diagnosis, and child’s disability on mother’s hope. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS version 23. Descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation rank explored the strength and direction of the correlational relationship between factors associated with hope and the level of hope in mothers. The findings suggest significant positive correlations between levels of hope and mother’s psychosocial and emotional support. Conversely, there was a significant negative correlation between levels of hope and having a child with a disability not related to cancer. There was not correlated with child’s diagnosis, prognostic information, length of time since diagnosis, and the family financial condition on mother’s hope. Knowledge of factors associated with hope in mothers, such as supportive resources that are available for mothers, enables nurses and healthcare providers both to help mothers to cope more effectively with their situation and to identify those mothers at greater risk of losing hope.
