Gambling addiction: Have the youth been caught up in the catastrophe?

Abstract


Recently, problem/pathological gambling has emerged as a significant issue especially amongst the youth. There is growing concern that they represent the highest risk group for gambling problems. A Geo-poll survey (2017) of youth between the ages of 17-35 in Sub-Saharan Africa revealed Kenya had the highest number of frequently gambling youth. Little effort has been made to respond to this adolescent risk behavior.

Biography


Caroline Kagia is a certified Addiction Counselor at the Serenity Place Treatment Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. She is a motivational speaker and part-time student at the Support for Addictions Prevention and Treatment in Africa (SAPTA). Having struggled with alcohol and gambling addiction for over ten years and successfully overcoming them, her passion now revolves around reaching out to people battling with the same, to their families as well as teaching on addiction. She is currently working on a book about her life in and out of addiction.
