Abstract

Statement of problem: Cesarean section is the most common major surgical procedure in obstetrics and gynecology in the world. Though advance in cesarean section technique, antibiotics, blood transfusion and other have improved maternal and fetal outcomes. Cesarean delivery still poses to maternal morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study is to determine the magnitude of maternal complications and associated obstetric factors among women who delivered by cesarean section at Chiro Hospital, Western Hararghe, Ethiopia, Methods: A Hospital-based retrospective study was conducted among 378 women who delivered by cesarean section from (January 1, 2015- January 30, 2016) at Chiro Hospital. Demographic data, associated obstetric factors and occurrence of intra-operative and postoperative maternal complication during their hospital stay were collected using a structured pre-tested checklist. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 20.0. Finding: The overall maternal complication rate was 42.3%. Living in rural setting (AOR= 1.5, 95% CI:1.0,2.3); maternal age ≥ 30 years (AOR= 2.1, 95% CI:1.1,3.8); presence of obstetric complications (AOR=2.617, 95%CI:1.437,4.767); operation done in second stage of labor (AOR=2.5,95%CI:1.4,4.6); labor ≥25 hours (AOR=1.4, 95%CI:1.0,2.5); and general anaesthesia (AOR=2.5,95%CI:1.4,4.4) were found to be significantly association with maternal complication. Conclusion: Maternal complication was found to be high. Living in a rural setting, maternal age ≥30 years, obstetrics complication, duration of labor ≥25 hours and use of general anesthesia were associated with the high maternal complication. Timely management of labor before a woman develops obstetrics complication and use of appropriate anesthesia will reduce the occurrence of complications
