Abstract

The cosmetic industry is now exploring the growing interest in the use of nano-technology in order to enhance the efficiency of products. DMT Agricultural Cooperative (A South African based Enterprise) through bioprospecting initiatives have identified an essential oil from the Rosegeranium plant to be incorporated in new cosmetic product lines to enter the markets. Our group further developed a body lotion and bath oil containing the identified oil. The bath oil was proven to have anti-microbial properties. The body lotion was developed using nano-technology, and evaluated for skin penetration properties. Both products passed safety and stability tests. The body lotion was proved to be effective in penetrating the skin thus enhancing delivery of actives. Nanotechnologybased cosmetic products have a great benefit in cosmetic formulations and in the end results of the application of a particular product. Recent publications: 1.
