Abstract

Background: Lack of knowledge among oncology nurses is considering one of the pain management barriers, despite the growing awareness on pain management, mild and severe pain is still common among hospitalized patients Objectives: The objective of this study was to measure the prevalence of nurses knowledge and attitude toward cancer pain management, and the factors affecting that among oncology nurses at Dubai hospital in United Arab Emirates. Methodology: This study was carried out in Oncology unit, Dubai hospital, Dubai Health Authority (DHA), United Arab Emirates in October 2017. It is a cross-sectional, descriptive study. A Convenience sample was selected to participate in this study, 79 Oncology nurses were met the inclusion criteria. Data collection carried out by using structured, selfadministered instrument “Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (KASRP)”. Results: The study revealed that the knowledge mean scores of correct answers towards oncology pain management is (62.9 %) (S.D ±11.5) 95 % C.I (60.3-65.5). While (52.2%) of the nurses practicing proper attitude towards oncology pain management (S.D ±33.7), 95 %CI, (44.6-59.7), Non-standard attitude was among 63 out of total (79.7 %), and inadequate knowledge (67) (84.4%). Level of Education, showed significant statistical association with Knowledge P = (.024), similarly for attitude as Level of Education has statistical association with nurses attitudes toward oncology pain management P =0.002. Stepwise logistic regression analysis showed age (0.049) and level of Education (0.42) has significant predictive factor with attitude. While only level of Education (0.037) showed significant predictive factor with knowledge. Conclusion: The present study showed that the oncology nurses in Dubai hospital reflect inadequate knowledge and non-standard attitude, which similar to others area around worldwide. However, tradition pain management education do not impact on knowledge and attitude score. Pain management education needs to go beyond traditional way.
