Reducing the time from entering emergency room to trans-arterial embolization in trauma patients

Abstract
Objectives: Reducing the time from entering the Emergency Room (ER) to Trans-Arterial Embolization (TAE) in trauma patients to speed up the treatment of trauma. Methods: 20 patients from ER who activated trauma team and underwent TAE from January 2015 to May 2016 were evaluated. In these twenty patients, the time from entering the ER to receiving TAE was 276.5 minutes on average. The reasons that delay time to receive TAE treatment included: (1) Staffs are not familiar with the trauma patient’s severity and situation, (2) lack of knowledge about handling the trauma case and (3) wait for families to sign TAE consent form too long. According to these reasons, we designed the following strategy for improvement, the items included: (1) Build up a standard operating procedure for these trauma patients to achieve the ER-TAE process smooth and safety, (2) design a checklist for trauma patients to facilitate staffs and (3) formulation of family members did not arrive at the hospital signed TAE consent form. We applied descriptive statistics to compare before and after improvement the time trend of the trauma patients from emergency room to TAE. Results: After the implementation of the countermeasures, from June 2016 to February 2017, a total of 10 patients who underwent TAE were examined. The average time was 128.7 minutes, 53.5% less than the previous 276.5 minutes. Conclusion: By performing the above measures are not up to trauma patients mentioned in the literature can accept clear aging care within 60 minutes, but the trauma patient from entering the ER to accept the TAE time was significantly shortened. The same can be done in the future to examine various types of care processes to enhance the quality of care for trauma patients and to increase patient safety.
