Lerner Research Institute

Cleveland Clinic’s rich history includes continuous emphasis on research and innovation. In 1921, the founders stated their commitment not only to treating disease and educating the next generations of healers, but also to researching the causes of disease. They realized that understanding the biological basis of disease is necessary to developing new diagnostics and therapeutics.

In 1945, the research labs were consolidated under a formal Division of Research. And more than 70 years later, Cleveland Clinic and the Lerner Research Institute are at the forefront of advanced techniques and biological discovery, emphasizing translational research that has the potential to change the way we practice medicine.

Today, the Lerner Research Institute is home to all basic, translational and clinical research at Cleveland Clinic. With nearly 1,500 researchers and support personnel in 175 laboratories in 12 departments, we are one of the largest research institutes in the nation, consistently ranking in the top 10 in National Institutes of Health funding, a benchmark of research success.

We are committed to training the next generation of biomedical researchers, with joint programs with nearby universities and our own Molecular Medicine PhD program. Our trainees have the opportunity to study in 700,000 square feet of state-of the-art laboratory and clinical research space, including the Genomic Medicine Institute, which is helping Cleveland Clinic usher in a new era of personalized medicine
